Last Saturday I was searching the web for a image of Candy. YUM! For a project I was working on.

In my head I was thinking of the Candy you eat. But google brought back images of People named Candy. Music Video’s with the word Candy in it. None of those things were relevant to what I was searching for. And of Course it found the Candy Image I was looking for.

But google can’t read my mind. It can only read the Word “CANDY” so therefore it brings me back anything with that word in it.

So image if you were a candy maker and I was actually searching to buy candy. I type in the word candy and google brings back all it results. You the Candy Maker are on that List of results. And because you were relevant to what I was searching for, I purchase Candy from you.

But not only that it didn’t cost you a thing to advertise to me. Because I found you from a simple google search.

So when I talk about Search engine Optimization for your website. I am talking about certain keywords that are placed on your website to help you rank in the search engines.

Of course you want the Keywords to be relevant to your Target Market. So you can get free Traffic sent to you from your friends the search engines.

Okay now that you understand how SEO work. Lets dig in to how to make your site search engine optimized.

The Crawl

Okay this part is very important because it’s what makes the search engines know you exists. The search engines send Bots to go poke around your website and find out what kind of content “keywords” you have on your site.

Once the bots tell the search engines you exist and what content you have on the page or website. The search engine can now begin indexing and ranking the site accordingly.

Your PAGE

The Main 3 things you need are:

1.Page Tile

The page title is found in the topmost sector of your web browser (the blue/black strip at the top of your web browser, with the logo of your web browser on the extreme left).

2.Headline

The name of your Article and/or Post

3.Body text

Pay attention to this detail it is key, because it helps in giving the user and search engines a better understanding of what your page is about.

Site

You might not think that site structure is important for SEO. But it is because people and search engines need to be able to find the information they are looking for on your website fast and easy.

You need to try to make your site as navigable as possible.

Here are some tips for doing that:

You need to try to keep your most important content close to you homepage 3 clicks away is ideal.

If You group your content logically it makes it easier for people and bots to sort through your content.

Create link backs on all your pages so that they loop back to other pages and don’t forget the homepage.

This may be the most important key to Search engine Optimization.

Linking

You need to have incoming links a.k.a Link Backs to your site from other websites.

The reason this is so important to SEO is because the higher amount of backlinks (websites linking to your website) the higher you will rank in google, yahoo etc.

So why should you focus on SEO? FREE TRAFFIC, baby free traffic.

Everyone with a blog raise your hand. Okay, What I should have said was everyone with a self hosted blog raise you hand. All the self hosted bloggers go chill out on another article. The rest of you don’t touch that mouse.

When most people think of a blog They think of a place that their friends and family go to check out photo’s and the latests news about them. People will just post random stuff that they like or think.

What most people don’t realize it’s a big marketing tool.

In an earlier article we talked about branding yourself like a movie star. The best way to do this is with a blog. Your Blog is your magic formula to building a relationship with your leads and prospects.

It’s what separates you from all the noise?

So the burning question is, Why can’t I just go to blogger dot com or one of those free sites and set up a free blog?

Well You could. But you whole goal and point with your blog is to position yourself as an expert and generate qualified leads for your business. To achieve this you have to look and act like a professional.

Not to mention blogging on a free site doesn’t give you the freedom and the virtual real estate you need to build a successful business online.

Other disadvantage include limited flexibility and control. Some blog services have a limited number of available themes (The “skin” that gives blogs their unique look), some do not allow advertising, and some do not have an easy way to back up your data. Ownership is another issue. While you own the content you have written, you do not own the domain – such as “brandonmorton.blogspot” –

Lastly, should the host cease to operate or randomly delete your blog (this has happened to many people), you are out of luck. To sum up, you are at the mercy of your blog’s provider.

Tools to start your blog:

While everyone has their preferences to the company they use to purchase their domain from.

I personally like 1and1. Many people now days are checking out godaddy Even though they are not my 1st choice you can check them out. Another popular one is Hostgator however I haven’t personally tried them. I heard they were good.

Once you have the domain in place you will need a hosting package. I personally use 1and1 for that also. I really have had good luck with their service. Again the above choices offer hosting. I have had a lot of problems with godaddy and I again I haven’t used Hostgator.

Another tool I use is thesis but I will be covering that in another post.

I am so frustrate right now. I have been sitting here starring at a blank computer screen trying to figure out the best way to explain, why you need to add a blog to your marketing tool box.

What keeps running through my mind is this big list.

I wish I knew a simple and easy way to explain to you that your blog is your hub. Like a doctor has an office where he diagnoses aliments and then scribes solutions to those problems. Your hub is used in the same sense. People come to you for advice for their problems and you provide the solutions with your products and/or services. While banding yourself as the expert.

I am sure you have been told you’re in a business of building relationships. So I don’t have to tell you that people join people NOT companies. Because you already know that. But what I bet you didn’t know is your blog is a way for your leads and prospects to connect with you build a relationship with you. Know, Like and trust you, because you solved their problems.

Well I don’t know how to tell you that you need a blog. I don’t know how to get the point across that

if you don’t have a blog, you’re missing out on the biggest pieces of the puzzle when it comes to internet marketing.
